Our award-winning Pre-School staff gently guide the children’s education, build their confidence and have lots of fun at the same time! Pre-School is very much part of the main school, which helps prepare the children for Reception.

Our small and friendly Pre-School takes children from the age of 3 until they’re ready to go to main school.

At St. Thomas Garnet’s Pre-school we provide a safe and stimulating environment where your child can have the best possible start in their educational journey.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets out three fundamental prime areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional development

Communication and Language

Physical Development

And there are four specific areas of learning:

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design.

The small class size means our staff have the time to focus on each child’s interests. We place a particular emphasis on learning through play.

We’re lucky to have a healthy balance of male and female staff that gives children good role models.

Paving the way to big school

We benefit from being located in the main school and this enables us to use many of its facilities.  The children benefit from French and Spanish lessons, tennis lessons from coach Harry, music lessons, PE sessions using the School hall, assemblies and hymn practice. Parents can meet with the early years team for Parent’s evenings and join the school community for Sports day and the Christmas production.

We follow the Government’s ‘Letters and Sounds’ and Jolly Phonics to teach letter sounds and develop listening skills in a fun and exciting way.  The children will have the opportunity to take home books in a book bag to aid the transition to ‘big school’.

We use an online system called Tapestry to record your child’s learning and development during their time with us.  Parents/Carers can access Tapestry each day to view their child’s learning journey.  Parents are their child’s first educators so they can record their home observations of their child to put onto Tapestry, allowing for a two-way communication.

We encourage visitors into the setting and participate in outings to enhance the children’s learning.  We have had visits from a doctor, musician, dentist, police, chiropractor and visited the park, Bournemouth Oceanarium and Sprinkles ice cream shop!

The setting accepts Early Years funding vouchers.
