At St Thomas Garnet’s School we are fortunate to be situated within our own walled grounds. With trees, plants, foliage and extensive grassed areas the children are able to safely explore while remaining in the confines of the school estate.
Learning outdoors allows the children to engage in many different ways. Using multi-sensory and experiential approaches encourages the children to become involved both physically and cognitively is integral to their learning.
In learning outside the children gain insight and helps them to make connections between their experiences and the world around them in a meaningful context.
WITHIN THESE CONTEXTS ARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE CHILDREN TO DEVELOP FURTHER SKILLS IN LITERACY, NUMERACY AND HEALTH & WELLBEING.
Sports such as football, touch rugby, cricket, track and field as well as our School Sports Day are held on our fields at the rear of the school. While the playground hosts activities such as tennis, basketball and badminton.
Our environmental zone allows for a tangible learning experience, the children can be close enough to touch giving them a better understanding of the life cycle.
It also teaches the children respect for nature and how important every plant, creature, bug, insect and arachnid is – irrespective of their size, lifespan, impact on the environment or how creepy they are!
FOR OUR EARLY YEARS PUPILS WE HAVE A MUD KITCHEN!
This is a wonderful, accessible area where the children can experience sensory and imaginative play.
It’s more than messy, mud pie fun! It enhances their fine motor skills and encourages role play, sharing and turn taking.
