PRE-SCHOOL

Pre-School really is the start of children's educational journey.  We see the early development of your child’s personality and their individual characters start to build.

We are here to nurture and encourage that development.

We do this by carefully balancing child and adult initiated learning through play and guided group activities.

OUR EARLY YEARS TEAM GET TO KNOW THE CHILDREN, NOT JUST LEARN THEIR NAMES.

Our staff are skilled at attuning themselves to the children – we adapt our behaviour and approach to make sure the children are always comfortable with us and know we are accessible to them at all times.

Patience and understanding are key; this comes naturally to us.

We enjoy hearing what each child has to say.  Allowing the children to express themselves verbally builds their confidence and improves their vocabulary and speech.

Our Pre-School is gloriously relaxed and fun, filled with smiles and laughter, with a mix of both male and female staff in the team the children have positive role models who aspire to bring out the best in each of them.

We all foster a creative-rich environment.

The walls are peppered with the children's art and creations – the space very much belongs to them.

We find this further reassures and soothes the children, especially those who may only be with us for a few hours a week.

OUR PRIVATE OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACE...

In addition to our own play area within the School playground, we’re fortunate to have an extensive outside learning space.  Here the children can explore nature and wildlife through direct contact with natural elements.  This environment inspires exploration and investigative learning all within the confines of the School’s site.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF SET ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE LEARNING AND DEVELOP KEY PROFICIENCIES, INCLUDING: -

Tennis

To help fine motor coordination, hand-eye coordination and agility, helps develop social skills and builds confidence.

French & Spanish

A group activity where the children learn basic vocabulary including colours, food and family.

PE

Inspiring children to be active and have fun.

Music

To inspire creativity, teaches patience and is a great form of expression.

Cooking

The children vote on what they’d like to cook or bake from ideas generated through group or story time.  For example, gingerbread people and pizza.

School Assembly

To help build unity with older children, practicing social skills and introducing the children to the school’s core values.

By being a part of a Primary School the Pre-School really gives the children a taste of what to expect as their educational journey progresses.

During school assemblies they can see the behaviour expected from the older children.  This direct insight indirectly teaches them how to sit and listen and how to participate in group activities.  They are less overwhelmed as they have experience of social interaction with peers – this helps with their transition in to your chosen primary setting.

ALTHOUGH THERE IS STRUCTURE TO THE CHILDRENS' DAY, TO A GREAT EXTENT WE PLAN IN THE MOMENT.

We are led by what the children enjoy doing, then build activities to enhance their learning.

Learning stations are open and available for the children at all times, giving them the opportunity to express themselves through creativity and at the same time acting as key elements of their development.

This early development is the foundation to learning and understanding.  We involve the children by describing what we’re doing and why – this is fundamental in advancing their language and communication skills.

By providing exciting and exploratory activities for the children to choose from we stimulate their thinking, spark their interests and provide the tools for them to garner knowledge.

We cover the EYFS 7 Areas of Learning using the same approach.  These are: -

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

  • Personal, social and emotional development

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design

IN THE COMMUNITY...

We pride ourselves on being community focussed – we regularly organise community-based activities, for example litter picking or visits to a local care home.

We readily encourage visits from children's extended family, to either talk about a specific subject to the children as a group or to simply be involved with the learning experience.

AHEAD OF YOUR CHILD'S FIRST DAY...

Before starting in Pre-school we ask parents to tell us all about their child (or children).

By using Tapestry – a software app – as a two-way communication tool we can get to know the children ahead of their first day.

Gathering this information and understanding your child’s interests allows us to build related activities to stimulate their learning and development.

We ask our parents to update these details via Tapestry as regularly as possible, especially after holidays so our Early Learning Team are as informed as can be.

The ‘all about me’ information covers your child’s interests, routine, likes, dislikes, fears and phobias.

We also ask if there are any particular books or characters that your child particularly likes.

THROUGHOUT THE DAY YOUR CHILD IS CLOSELY OBSERVED.

This attention is key, it ensures we respond to the individual needs of the children by monitoring their progress and making sure any struggles or obstacles are overcome.

To keep this centric we operate a Key Person System within our Early Learning Team.

Before your child joins our Pre-school we hold a meet and greet afternoon.

Here you will get to know your Key Person within the Early Learning Team and get a real sense of how our Pre-school is organised.

And if your child doesn’t settle straight away we will find ways to make sure their transition into Pre-School isn’t unnerving for them, or you.

OUR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY IS TO GUIDE YOUR CHILD'S FIRST STEPS IN THEIR LEARNING JOURNEY...

This duty of care extends to supporting their parents and families.  If you have any concerns the whole Early Years Team is here to work with you directly or signpost you to specialist support.

Everyone connected with St Thomas Garnet’s Pre-School are very proud to be at the start of your child’s unique journey.

We look forward to meeting you.
