Year 2 is an exciting year for our young pupils. The children are starting to feel more grown up, their speech and language is becoming more advanced and their sense of the world around them is becoming more curious.
We encourage this curiosity. On varying levels, the children are seeking more independence, but still need the confidence and reassurance from us.
We see very clear evidence of this every day – so we tailor our lessons to support their individual learning.
We deliver a mixture of discrete and focussed subjects using topics to keeping lessons interesting in order to maintain and inspire the children's willingness to learn.
USING RESEARCH TOOLS SUCH AS CHROMEBOOKS, LAPTOPS & BOOKS THE CHILDREN EXPLORE EACH TOPIC AND CREATE THEIR OWN OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES.
This can be painting and drawing birds in Science, sewing and pastels of Florence Nightingale in History or using everyday objects to understand weights and measures in Maths.
With Maths being a subject that can be overshadowed by complex understanding of times tables, adding and subtracting we use real-life context, for example how much change they would expect when shopping. This is great for parents too as it can be extended into the children’s home lives and practiced with their families in everyday situations.
Our focus incorporates the development of the childrens’ literacy skills. This encompasses widening their vocabulary and refining their grammar.
We make sure the children are enthused through interesting and thought-provoking subjects, letting their imaginations do the rest!
THIS APPROACH SUPPORTS THEIR WRITING OF BOTH FICTION & NON-FICTION IN HISTORY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES AS WELL AS ENGLISH.
As a group (and with individual pupils) we read together, it is more than just story time though as the children are also thinking about the story and characters in more detail. We want them to gain a deeper understanding of what we’re reading, we ask them to consider how they feel, how they would empathise with characters and if they engage with the subject.
We find this approach motivates the children to talk to each other (and us) and share their own thoughts and ideas. This makes for a rich learning environment with the sharing of knowledge inclusive for all students.
WITH A TEACHING ASSISTANT IN ADDITION TO OUR CLASS TEACHER WE CAN ENSURE THE CHILDREN LEARN AT A PACE THAT IS RIGHT FOR THEM.
The children are encouraged to celebrate good things and share their experiences with the class.
During discussion times we talk about kindness to others and the importance of tolerance and good ethics.
The Class Teacher and Teaching Assistant are always available for the children to talk to, but they also find discussing concerns with their classmates particularly helpful.
THERE IS STILL A STRONG SENSE OF FUN COUPLED WITH AN EAGERNESS TO LEARN IN YEAR 2.
The expectation from the Class Teacher is slightly higher and the children truly give their best to achieve the goals set.
Their overall wonderment at being introduced to new things is very clear.
We nurture this enthusiasm and raise the bar giving the children the tools to excel in their educational journey.
