Starting their second year of Key Stage 2 our Year 4 children are aware that more will be expected of them this year.
Their homework becomes more structured and more frequent, there is also an understanding this will be a full and busy year for them.
The children are maturing though and becoming more educationally centric during their school day.
That’s not to say their lessons and activities aren’t still enjoyable, designed to rouse their interests.
SUBJECTS ARE TAUGHT CROSS-CURRICULAR LED BY TOPICS, AND KEPT IN LINE WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S STATUTORY SCHEMES OF LEARNING.
That said, we never want the students to feel as if they are ticking a box or fulfilling objectives – the key to maintaining their enthusiasm for learning is to be inventive as to how subjects are delivered and keeping the topics fresh and original.
With this in mind we use drama and narrative to reinforce the subject matter. It allows the children to explore feelings and emotions. They plan the work in groups then act out their compositions to the class, including a description of the location and surroundings. This is always lively, animated and truly brings the topic to life!
For the children to accurately visualise historical themes such as Victorians or Egyptians we’ll take the class on a field trip to a local museum. We’re fortunate in Bournemouth to have a number close by.
The success of these visits are evident in the children's creative writing – how they interpret their experiences is unmistakeably unique.
The focus in Year 4 English is largely honing the children's writing skills – we are more strict with punctuation, spelling and the accurate use of words.
THE CHILDREN WILL BE WORKING TOWARDS EARNING THEIR 'PEN LICENCE' IN YEAR 4.
This achievement of moving from pencil motivates the class to improve their handwriting and consider their penmanship. It becomes almost a right of passage and a step towards a maturity in their individual journeys. However, it is not a competition, as each child progresses at their own pace, we give emphasis to the children's positive efforts in order to build their confidence and foster independence.
Independent learning and thinking for themselves in Year 4 is further encouraged through project work. Tools such as Chromebooks and laptops are always available for this purpose. The children explore, investigate and research their own content using it as they see fit. We are presented with some incredibly descriptive and creative finished work.
DURING READING TIME WE ENCOURAGE THE CHILDREN TO CHOOSE FROM A WIDE RANGE OF LITERATURE.
This expands their vocabulary and makes them much more confident readers.
Reading is the perfect activity to carry on at home, literature can extend to newspapers and comics or graphic novels.
As with literacy, we deliver subjects such as Maths, Design & Technology and Geography using a much more hands-on approach.
Understanding surface areas, measuring and designing is easier when you’re building a birdhouse!
Especially when they are put in the school’s grounds so we can observe birds enjoying them.
WE TEAM UP WITH YEAR 3 IN PART OF OUR GEOGRAPHY WORK - WHERE THE CHILDREN FURTHER IMPROVE THEIR MAP READING SKILLS.
Collaborating as a group we ask the children to plan a journey using maps of the area. We then follow their mapped route to see where we end up! This gives the classes a real sense of accomplishment when we arrive where they are expecting us to.
We run practical activities, carry out experiments and demonstrate functions. Lessons are always energetic and absorbing, compelling the children to want to explore further at home.
Science offers a wonderful opportunity for the children to immerse themselves in the subject.
This opens fantastic possibilities for our parents to align practical learning at home with the subject in school.
THERE IS A VERY OPEN, HONEST, WARM AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE IN YEAR 4.
The Year 4 term starts with the children deciding on their class rules. This is discussed and decided on collaboratively.
Additionally, during circle time we talk about how we feel, how we could do better and if there is anything concerning us.
The children relate to each other, teachers and visitors in very natural respectful and kind manner.
Our Year 4 Class Teacher is available during the day at pick up and drop off times.
In addition to Parent Evenings we maintain frequent communication with our parents via email.
