Year 5 is a year of preparation and cultivating a mindset within the children to take ownership of their learning.
They are becoming stronger individuals and further developing their independence.
Their maturity and confidence is building as they are fully aware of their time in Primary School is nearing its end.
During this year we are looking to enrich our pupils relationship with education and learning.
Many of them will be preparing for Grammar School by taking their 11 Plus exam, making this a pivotal year for them as it may dictate their secondary school setting.
TO HELP FOCUS THE CHILDREN WE RUN BRAIN TEASERS FOR AN HOUR AFTER SCHOOL DURING THE SPRING TERM...
As some subjects lend themselves to a more cross-curricular approach we teach a blend of both cross-curricular and discrete subjects.
This extra-curricular activity can be challenging but really helps with motivation.
Delivered within topics, the objectives and achievements are clear – we set high standards in Year 5 so the children start to become accustomed to the expectations of Year 6 and beyond.
Our Topic on Ancient Greece crosses English and History with the children leading their own projects, this further reinforces responsibility for their own learning.
The discrete teaching of maths completely isolates the subject – with the complexities of probabilities and polygons we focus on the comprehensive understanding – and making sure no child is left behind.
IN YEAR 5 THE CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED TO PRACTICE A LEVEL OF MENTAL MATHEMATICS AS WELL AS WRITTEN & PRACTICAL TECHNIQUES.
During lessons we clearly demonstrate the relationship with maths in the real world – this helps understanding as a direct comparison can be made. This is important especially now with the excuse of calculators on mobile phones!
Science is a particularly exciting subject in Year 5 as we cover space and astronomy, the children find this exceptionally engaging and are always eager to learn as much as possible.
WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY ENCOURAGING THE USE OF ALTERNATIVE WORDS IN ORDER TO EXPAND THE CHILDREN'S VOCABULARY.
Literacy is reinforced in all subjects, there is a heavy emphasis on punctuation, grammar and further importance on using the correct words.
To allow the children to demonstrate their independence the class assembly is led by the pupils.
Prayer and discussions are surrounding issues they have raised, and can vary tremendously, always making for a lively, yet supportive dialogue.
Behaviour, performance and conduct are closely monitored and reviewed, however, Year 5 is a proud class who set their own high principles.
MINDFULNESS PLAYS A PART IN OUR PSHE PROGRAMME, GIVING SUPPORT TO THE CHILDREN OUTSIDE SCHOOL AS WELL AS IN.
It provides a foundation to recognise and manage difficulties they may experience, it helps them to concentrate and be less distracted, gives a greater awareness of relationships and how to manage them, as well as offering a richer understanding of things like self-esteem and optimism.
We maintain a close relationship with our parents through email communication, reports and parent evenings.
Along with an informal open-door policy with the Class Teacher.
As in every year at St Thomas Garnet’s our objective is for the children to flourish.
Principally, the school has the feel of a small community, we are anti-bullying champions and make sure every child is guided and supported to maximise their potential.
